EVERETT, WA—Tacoma Narrows FC debuted their  new name and kits in grand style as they rushed past the Snohomish County Steelheads 4-0 on Sunday June 10 before 52 fans at Goddard Stadium in the 1st Annual I-5 Challenge Match.

The Steelheads struggled to organize their defense and had very little offensive thrust in a first half that ended 3-0 in favor of the visitors. Snohomish came to life in the second half for a bit as they tried to press for a goal. They got close when Carlos Rodriguez hit the post with a low shot, but never could break through.

Tacoma’s historic first goal came in the 31st minute on a header from Eric Schacht off a cross from Aj Nitzel. It was Nitzel’s turn next (Scott Hanson) and it was 2-0 for Tacoma. Victor Akoi (Ian Karanja) virtually assured the result before the break. In the second half the rout was complete on a goal by Scott Hanson (Spencer Whiting.)

The Steelheads see their overall record fall to 5-3-2. It was the most goals scored on Snohomish in a match this year.

The paid attendance of 52 was also the smallest home crowd to watch the Steelheads play this season. Previous matches at Kamiak HS Field (118) and Lakewood HS Dick Cardinal Stadium (143) were bigger draws.

The weather was blustery and overcast but the match was completed before any rain fell.

The Steelheads were not pleased with their effort. They did find a silver lining in the play of new forward Jason Fairhurst and also in the performance from Carlos Rodriguez, who was tried in a more attacking role. Rodriguez was awarded a club scarf as Snoco FC’s Man of the Match.
