SMOKEY POINT, WA—Garret Robinson looked right at home in the Snohomish County FC defense in the Steelheads’ 2021 Western Washington Premier League opening 4-1 win at Grays Harbor Gulls. His speed, calm and experience highlighted his Fish debut. His chill personality came through in a post-match interview during the car ride home.
Garret is known in the Snohomish soccer scene for his stand-out seasons with the Everett High School Seagulls. Then came a 5-year run with Montana State Billings in the GNAC. Some called Garret by the nickname “G” at Everett. In college it eventually turned into “G-Rob.” Either way, Robinson is appreciated both as a player and as a person.
“Garret and I go way back,” says SnoCo FC Director of Soccer and Steelheads WWPL Head Coach Dagi Kesim. “When he was a young and talented player I used to privately train him and work with his club as a trainer. He is not just a talented athlete but a great community leader and has an amazing heart.”
Garret connected with the Fish over the winter. “I started training with the Steelheads indoor team this winter after being invited by a friend,” he says. “I’ve known Dagi (Kesim) since he was my personal trainer when I was around 13 years old. I’ve always respected him as a coach, so when I found out he coached the outdoor team, I got in touch with him and he invited me for a trial.”
As for the debut on April 3 in Aberdeen, maybe it was fate that the Everett Seagull was facing off against the Grays Harbor Gulls. “We had a great first performance against Grays Harbor,” Robinson says. “It was awesome to get a peak at what the WWPL has to offer for competition. I was really pleased with the outcome and I thought we played some really nice soccer at times. As you can see when you watch the goals that we scored, our guys in the midfield and our strikers played unreal.”
Garret fits right in with the Fish, but there is plenty of work left to do for both the player and the team. “I’ve been out of the competitive soccer scene for a few years, so I’m really just looking forward to playing in meaningful games again,” Robinson reveals. “It’s been great getting to know the guys on the team, I’m looking forward to meshing with them on and off the field as the season progresses. Most of all, I’m looking forward to defending our title. Go Fish!”
