Two goalkeepers who had previously not seen action featured for the Fish and came through with solid performances. Counting an earlier half-hour match in an April 21 jamboree, the two clubs have now played 120 minutes of scoreless soccer against each other in 2018. But there were plenty of chances for both sides.

SERGIO_BARRERAIn the first half Steelheads goalkeeper Sergio Barrera made a series of important saves including a horizontal stretch around the 35-minute mark that parried away a sure Hammers goal.

On the attack the Steelheads were getting occasional chances and had a very good one when Logen Flem delivered a special cross from the right across to the far post. Nate Thompson rose for the header but it skied high and out of play.

Snohomish County brought in Everett CC goalkeeper Drexel Cardona for the second half and the position continued to get solid play. The Hammers had 4 straight corner kicks at one point but were kept out. Defender Gunnar Stohl led an organized back line that didn’t flinch. At the other end the Fish had chances on set plays and on a 2-on-1 breakaway that saw the ball skip over forward Andrew Escalante‘s foot at the deciding moment as he tried to make room for a shot.

Stohl was named Man of the Match for the Steelheads and was awarded a club scarf.

The Fish left Bellingham with a sense of accomplishment that they had shut down a powerful United side that scored 7 goals midweek in their previous match against Whatcom CC.

Next Snohomish County is at home for the first time this year as the Fish host the defending EPLWA Champion Seattle Stars at 3 PM on Saturday May 5 at Kamiak High School. Admission is a $5 donation (cash or Paypal via cell phone).
