SMOKEY POINT, WA— The Snohomish County FC Steelheads plan for the 2019 Western Washington Premier League (WWPL) season is slowly coming into focus this week as the club attended the annual league meeting and got news in regards to a home venue.

Five Home Opponents Revealed

The WWPL meeting revealed that SnoCo FC is scheduled to host the Issaquah Gunners, Federal Way FC, Lacey Pocket Gophers, Puget Sound FC and the Grays Harbor Gulls at home this season. It’s likely the Steelheads will also host at least one friendly. The home season could see matches hosted in April, May, June and July.

Smokey Point Home Venue

There is a preliminary agreement between the Steelheads and the Lakewood School District that the club can call Dick Cardinal Stadium at Lakewood High School its home venue in 2019. The Steelheads will submit desired dates and times and the district will verify them after it has scheduled Lakewood Cougar spring sports. The timeline for final details on SnoCo FC home matches is late February to early March.

The Fish will request Saturday use of the stadium with late afternoon / early evening kick off times.

SnoCo FC has held open tryouts at Lakewood HS that last 2 years and played Everett College in a match at the venue in 2018. Here’s an article from an earlier visit.

SEASON PASSES: Discounted now through December 31, 2018.

Open Tryouts

Tentatively the Steelheads plan to hold 2019 Open Tryouts the weekend of March 2-3 at Lakewood High School. Those plans will be finalized as time grows closer.

Coming into Focus

The flurry of off season developments is just the latest chapter for SnoCo FC, a club that was founded back in 2017 and will be entering its third year of existence when it graduates up to regional competition in the WWPL in 2019. Previously the Steelheads traveled to find matches and occasionally hosted visitors in exhibition friendlies.

The Steelheads will swim south for matches at Tacoma Narrows FC, BeSea FC (Bellevue), defending league champs Kirkland Goats FC, Crossfire (Redmond) and Harbor Soccer Club (Gig Harbor).

Dick Cardinal Stadium is the favored choice of players, coaches and volunteer staff for several reasons. The pitch is the best in the county, featuring a level, new turf surface with cork fill. The stadium is just off of I-5. Parking and stadium entry are just a few feet away from each other.

Now that the club has a basic framework to build the season around, the next tasks are networking with fellow league clubs on dates and times, continuing to communicate with Lakewood SD, finding partners (sponsors), and reaching out to the north county community.
