SMOKEY POINT, WA— The Snohomish County FC Steelheads had to wait a few days after Thursday’s big win at XF Redmond, but on Sunday they got the result they were hoping for and have finished their first season in the Western Washington Premier League as Champions.
On Sunday July 21 at Karl Grosch Field Federal Way FC jumped out to a 2-0 lead over Nido Aguila Seattle after only 23 minutes of play. Steelheads players and coaches were following updates via social media and the early scoreline boosted hopes. The Steelheads needed a Nido loss or draw to take the title.
The next report came in that Nido had pulled one back before halftime. Then they drew level 2-2 with still about 10 minutes to play. It seemed like an eternity for another update, but when it came it was to post a 2-2 final result that cleared the way for Snohomish to stand alone at the top of the 2019 WWPL table.
In their first season in a league of any sort, the Steelheads had done the improbable, resting at the top of the table and doing so while going unbeaten and surrendering just 6 goals in 10 matches. The club’s 7 wins and 3 draws had earned them 24 standings points and they needed each and every one of them to finish a single point above XF Redmond.
