MUKILTEO, WA— The Snohomish County Steelheads want to test their progress against the best competition they can find and on Saturday May 5 the defending EPLWA Champion Seattle Stars visited Kamiak Field to take on the Fish. Snohomish learned a lot about what  it will take to go to the “next level” as the Steelheads played well at times but eventually fell to the Stars 3-0 before 118 spectators. The loss dropped the Steelheads’ full match record to 1-1-1 in 2018.

Seattle got a fortunate goal in the first half on a dropped save by Steelheads goalkeeper Drexel Cardona that was quickly pounced on and poked home. It was 1-0 at the break and even though Seattle was dominating possession and play SnoCo had a right to feel like they were still in it.

The second half saw a quick burst of energy from the Orange and it looked like it was game on. However Seattle turned the match with a quick goal just a few moments later to make it 2-0. Steelheads foward Ahmed Ahme was sent off with a red card for a two-footed tackle with about half an hour to go and that made the matter all the more challenging for the Fish.

Head Coach Dagi Kesim wanted a goal for his home crowd and elected to keep an attack formation while a man down. He later noted that the third Seattle goal “was on me” for making that choice.

The Seattle Stars welcomed a group of players from the University of Washington and Seattle University in this match. The D-1 talent will be relied on for that club as they try to repeated as Evergreen Premier League Champs in 2018.

On Saturday May 12 the Steelheads stay in the county but head north to Arlington to host Everett College Trojans at 3 PM at Lakewood High School. Admission is by a suggested $5 donation at the gate.
