Steelheads play Timbers U23 Saturday in Oregon
SMOKEY POINT, WA— The Snohomish County FC Steelheads will travel to Salem Oregon on Saturday May 11 to play the Portland Timbers U23’s. It will be SnoCo FC’s first-ever match played out of state. It will also be the first contest for the Fish against a club from USL League Two (formerly the PDL.)
One of the benefits of having a club like the Steelheads in Snohomish County is providing opportunities for local players to test themselves against top opposition. So when SnoCo FC were contacted by the Timbers U23’s in regards to playing a friendly, the response came quickly. “We were surprised but pleased to get an invite to come down to play the Timbers U23’s,” says Steelheads General Manager David Falk. “I got together with our Head Coach Dagi Kesim and we had a short chat about it. Certainly it would be a challenge on and off the pitch, but were we up to giving it a try? We both knew we couldn’t pass on the chance to give our guys this opportunity.”
So now the Steelheads (2-0-3), who have only played two league matches in their history, will travel to play a club connected to the MLS Portland Timbers.
The Timbers U23’s (2-0-0) have already played twice this week, taking a 2-1 win over PDX FC last Saturday followed by a 1-0 win over TFA FC of Willamette on Wednesday night. The Steelheads last played on May 4 when they drew 2-2 at home against ISC Gunners.
The Timbers U23’s struggled last season but historically are Northwest Division contenders. They won the National Championship back in 2010.
The next WWPL match for the Steelheads comes on Saturday May 18 when the club hosts Federal Way FC at 4 PM in Smokey Point.
