Steelheads rally to top Force as Escalante and Paden score twice

The Steelheads enjoy a 6-4 win with special guests from Snohomish United.

SNOHOMISH, WA—The Snohomish County FC Steelheads earned their second win of the 2021-22 Western Indoor Soccer League (WISL) season on Saturday night December 11 at the Snohomish Sports Dome with a come from behind 6-4 win over Bremerton’s Oly-Pen Force.

Andrew Escalante scored 2 goals and dished out 2 assists for the Fish. Season team leading scorer Glenn Paden also scored twice. He assisted on Escalante’s second goal.

After a scoreless first quarter, Snohomish struck first in the second quarter on a quick dribble and turn at the top of the box from Cristiano Whitaker. Leo Hernandez of the Force tied the game, 1-1. The Steelheads took a 2-1 lead with 2:47 left in the second when a rare indoor header goal from Jeremy Maldonado looped over the goalkeeper. The Force answered with a pair of late goals by Brady Vernik and Matt Olson and took a 3-2 lead at the half.

But Snohomish County and goalkeeper Dorian Lair would allow just one more Force goal, a third quarter strike by Alex Hernandez, and Paden and Escalante each scored a goal in the third and fourth quarters to take the 6-4 win, Snohomish’s second of the season.

Escalante got Snohomish level 3-3 just 15 seconds into the second half. Drew Ferris found him on a run and Andrew calmly finished at the far post.

It was 4-4 with 1:43 left in the third quarter after Maldonado poked a ball into the mixer that Paden flicked into the roof of the Force net.

In the last quarter the Steelheads took the lead on another crafty touch from Paden. This time his redirection provided the match winner off an assist from Jordan Correa. It was 5-4 Fish with 8:33 to go in the match.

Escalante sealed the win with a tap-in from Paden with 4:09 to go. The Fish held the Force scoreless the rest of the way.

The Steelheads even their record at 2-2 and are in 4th place (playoff position). The team bounces back from a disappointing 8-4 loss to the Portland Black Tails on December 4 in Oregon. The Fish are at Oly Town (Olympia) on December 18 and then go into a Holiday Break until January 8th when Bellingham United visit the Snohomish Sports Dome for a 7 PM match.

Snohomish County goals: Glenn Paden (2), Andrew Escalante (2), Jeremy Maldonado, Cristiano Whitaker

Oly-Pen Force goals: Leo Hernandez, Brady Vernik, Matt Olson, Alex Hernadez
