Lady Fish Clinch Championship Birth, Men Hold Slim Playoffs Hopes

Snohomish, WA

The last two weeks saw the Lady Fish extend their unbeaten streak to 12 games in a row, beating Oly-Pen Force 14-3, and Bellingham United 9-3, also clinching their 2nd straight NWPLi Championship birth. Steelheads Men still hold a small chance to keep their playoff hopes alive after dropping points in their last two matches.

Lady Fish 12-Games Unbeaten, Championship Booked

February 5th – Bremerton, WA

The Lady Fish came out to play Sunday afternoon away at Oly-Pen Force. The ladies scored 5 goals to start out the first quarter of play with Kayla Soderstrom, and Maggie Tonkin both scoring within the first 5 minutes of play. M’ily Morton and Liv Larson would soon follow with 2 additional goals. Lastly, with 6-seconds left in the first, Peyton Chick would cap off the quarter with another goal.

The second quarter was no different for the ladies. Peyton Chick would get her second goal of the match with 11 minutes left in the half. The rest of the half would see Anna Roslander and Gracie VanAssche with a goal each, and with just under 3 minutes left, Maggie Tonkin would add the 9th goal for the Fish.

The third quarter would see fewer goals, but sure enough, the Steelheads’ defense still held Oly-Pen to zero goals all the way through the third quarter. Nevertheless, Peyton Chick would add her tally for a Hat-Trick (3 goals), and M’ily Morton added her second goal of the game. The quarter would end 11-0.

Going into the 4th, M’ily Morton would add her third goal, getting her own self a Hat-Trick 45 seconds into the quarter. Liz Moretti would get her first goal at 7:20, then with 3:20 left in the game Gracie VanAssche would get her second goal of the game to wrap up scoring for the Fish. The game wouldn’t go scoreless for Oly-Pen. They would add goals at the 12:39, 3:35, and 2:49 minute marks.

With that win, the ladies sealed their spot in the NWPLi Championship game scheduled for early March.

The Steelheads opened up the scoring early by tallying two goals in the first quarter – one from Soderstrom and another from Chick. After that, it was a back-and-forth match between both teams until Chick registered her second goal of the night midway through the second quarter to take a 3-0 lead before Emily Webster of Bellingham would score just before the half. The third quarter came to an end scoreless but things really heated up when M’ily Morton scored for at the 14:42 mark of the fourth quarter, followed quickly by four more goals from the Ladies’ offense ending with an impressive 9-3 win

It was truly an incredible display of teamwork, skill, and determination from both sides as they battled it out through four quarters of intense competition. In particular, everyone cheered loudly when Payton Chick notched her hat trick in the fourth quarter – including two goals that sealed their victory – and Kayla Soderstrom had an equally impressive performance as well with her brace during the first quarter.

Men Drop to 3-5-1, holding slim playoff hopes

February 4th – Snohomish, WA

The Steelheads Men hosted Bellingham United in a Saturday night match that would see the Fish dropping points. This would be their biggest loss of the season, falling 2-12 at home.

Bellingham United (4-4-1) started fast and never looked back, scoring four goals in the first quarter alone to take a 4-0 lead. Danny Fazio led the way for Bellingham with three goals in the contest and was supported by Ale Tomasi who also scored three times, Adan Fernandez (two goals), Riley Liddle, Richard Henderson, Elliot Rains, and Mason Rudolph who each added one goal of their own.

The unfortunate part of the night belonged to the Steelheads Men (3-5-1) who struggled to find any consistent offense throughout the game. Glenn Paden and Tyler Hopp were able to get on the board for the Fish, but not before they had already found themselves in a tough position.

Both teams will now turn their attention to next week’s games as they continue their fight for a playoff spot in this highly competitive division. Bellingham is starting to heat up at just the right time while the Fish will look to regroup after this loss if they want any chance at making postseason play this year.

February 11th – Snohomish, WA

The Steelheads Men faced an unbeaten Tacoma Stars Reserves in an 8-0 loss at The ShoWare Center in Kent, Washington on Saturday afternoon.

The game started off with Steve Mohn getting on the board for the Reserves, followed by Isidro Prado-Huerta and Thyago Henrique each finding the back of the net to make it 3-0. In the third quarter, Henrique added another goal to register a brace and put Tacoma up 4-0. The goals kept coming as Amos Freiheit, Mark Lee, Alejandro Guzman, and Kyle Rivers all scored one a piece to take an 8-0 lead into the final whistle. Steelheads goalkeeper Alex Thiehofe came up big for the Fish, easily recording 30+ massive saves in the match.

The win pushed Tacoma (9-0-1) one step closer to clinching the top spot in their division heading into playoffs. It was a disappointing result for The Fish (3-6-1) who couldn’t find any offense against a strong Tacoma Stars Reserves team. Despite being unable to get on the scoreboard themselves, The Fish did have their chances throughout the game that could have changed the course of the game if they had found the goal.
