Hammers hold off Steelheads at the Snohomish Sports Dome

SNOHOMISH, WA—The Snohomish County FC Steelheads Men played Bellingham United for the first time in a league match on Saturday January 8 at the Snohomish Sports Dome. The contest featured scoring streaks by both clubs but in the end the perennially contending Hammers notched a 9-6 win (full video replay.)

The streaky scoring saw BUFC bolt out to a 3-0 lead in the first quarter. The Steelheads fought back with 2 goals before the period ended, and then added 2 more in the second quarter to go into halftime with a 4-3 lead.

The experienced Hammers were ready for the third quarter. They ran off 4 goals in the frame to take a 7-4 lead. They continued the march with a 5th straight goal in the last quarter and it was 8-4 Hammers and looking like a rout.

The Fish didn’t quit and grabbed back 2 of their own to narrow the margin to 8-6 before Bellingham got one more to provide a 9-6 final score.

The Steelheads are now 2-4 on the season (4th place) while the Hammers improve to 4-1-1 (2nd place.) The Fish play at the Tacoma Stars Reserves on Saturday January 15. Tacoma lost for the first time on the weekend when they dropped an 8-7 match at Oly Town. The Stars remain in first place in the WISL with a 6-1 record.
